STEEL ON ICE History

The STEEL ON ICE Ski Club is the Pittsburgh Chapter of the National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS).  The idea to form a Pittsburgh club began when Gene Jetter met a member of Jim Dandy Ski Club (of Detroit), at the Seven Springs Ski Resort, where they talked about the goals and activities of the NBS.  Gene shared this information with June Wormsley, Wilburn Boykins, Robert Edison, and Rodney Jones.  These daring five went to the week long convention (or Summit) sponsored by the NBS at Park City, Utah in 1985 and decided that a Pittsburgh Chapter should be formed.  Steel on Ice was formed in 1988 by 14 charter members (Carol Adams, Ernest Anderson, David Broaden, Warren Brooks, Wilber Boykins, Emily Davis, Robert Edison, Eugene Jeter, Rodney Jones, Diana Madden, Sitnotra Outlaw, Micheal Sturdivant, Michael Watkins, and June Wormsley), all with a devotion to the sport of alpine skiing.  Steel on Ice was sponsored by the Southern Snow Seekers, the Atlanta chapter of the NBS, and was voted in as a member club of the NBS in 1989.  Also, we were incorporated in 1989 with the help of our own Linda Cobb.  The NBS organizes and sponsors an annual week long convention (summit) at major ski areas. STEEL ON ICE has attended all the NBS summits since 1989 including: Steamboat, Heavenly (Lake Tahoe), Park City, Copper Mountain, Innsbruck, Vail, Sun Valley, Keystone, Aspen/Snowmass, Whistler, Banff, Breckenridge, and Winter Park!  We take pleasure in introducing our sport to new people, young and old.  We give helpful hints about the sport to make in an enjoyable experience.  By traveling together, we are able to obtain group discounts.  Our early season learn-to-ski day has become a Steel on Ice tradition.  Steel on Ice is a club for all seasons.  Our winter and summer activity calendar is developed by input from all members.  In addition to skiing, we have an annual picnic, an annual golf outing, we go whitewater rafting, biking, and travel to art & jazz festivals, and much more! Come join in the fun ... challenge yourself ... create lasting friendships!!!
